NIL era comes and NCAA relinquishes their punishment role for accepting benefits.

Then we learn from the Knight Commission that NCAA mishandled women’s basketball.

And now THIS. Looks A LOT like them trying to justify their existence by making an example.

The NCAA is the WORST

Barstool has issues if the content wasn’t cleared.

Cropping an image isn’t, in itself, transformative. Barstool is obviously a commercial enterprise.

What’s the normal licensing fee? That’s the actual damages. With a copyright registration, there’s potential statutory relief.

Barstool Sports has been sued by a photographer for copyright infringement.

I expect a continued rise in these types of cases as athletes and companies fail to clear rights before posting content on websites and social media.

New #LSU starting quarterback Max Johnson says all the leaders of the position groups spoke before camp. He stood up and it was one of his first moments of clearly being the QB1 at #LSU

“Bryce (Young) is one of those few athletes that’s a blue chip player at a blue chip program, and they are going to have those deals (7 figures) come in with little work.”

SEC presidents, as expected, have voted to extend a membership invitation to Texas & Oklahoma, sources tell @SINow.

OU and Texas board of regents meet Friday to accept the invitation - the final step in securing the richest and most powerful conference in college sports history.

Training Camp Reminder: Practice INTs aren’t always bad. As a QB, practice should be used as a trial and error period in order to find comfort zones with certain throws, concepts, and to test what you like/dislike before it actually counts on game day.

I have confirmed with the Missouri State High School Activities Association that students at Affiliate Registered schools can enter into NIL deals and they and their school remain eligible to compete against schools that are full members of the MSHSAA.

.@SINow has obtained the cease and desist letter that the Big 12 sent to ESPN.

In it, commissioner Bob Bowlsby says that ESPN has reached out to at least one of the eight remaining Big 12 members in an attempt to convince the school to leave in wake of the Texas and OU exit.

Bryce Young is very marketable, but he likely hasn’t done anywhere near $1 million in #NIL deals.

At least not yet.

However, Nick Saban has the world talking about it and that’s 1 reason why Alabama will continue to be at the top of the recruiting game. Saban’s playing chess.

Happy to receive a scholarship offer from Georgia Tech University with @coachchoice @GeorgiaTechFB 🐝 over the @FootballHotbed middle school showcase weekend @reddblaze7333 da 🔌@ColtBoyz14u 🐴 💯

Just got off a call with Mark Emmert and a small group of reporters. He wants a thorough rethinking of the NCAA structure and governance, with more power handed down to conferences on the heels of Alston ruling, NIL, etc. More details to come...

Is a federal #NIL law for college athletes still needed?

If Congress acts, it should keep it as close to just saying this: The NCAA, conferences, high school athletic associations, and schools can't restrict NIL activity.

The end.

Re claims that NIL “will hurt women. That…falsely assumes that female athletes have no value to potential sponsors…or…creative or entrepreneurial potential…It’s ridiculous to act like denying NIL rights in any way helps women of any sport, color, or socioeconomic background.”

A record total 2⃣8⃣9⃣ @WakeForest student-athletes have been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll!

It also marks the fifth consecutive year the Deacs have had an increase in student-athletes on the ACC Academic Honor Roll. 👏👏👏

@SportsLawLust @jwiegand10 @ConDetrimental @carli_baldwin a fellow Barstool Athlete sharing some insight on Tik tok about the relationship between Barstools “Marketing Agency” and the athletes. Wondering how this will shift the analysis of what she says is accurate.

In 2020, the University of Colorado at Boulder entered into a 5-year deal with sports betting brand PointsBet.

Athletes at CU Boulder are banned from participating in sports betting, but can they endorse such a company?

It would be hypocritical to deny such a deal, no? #NIL

The NIL era has that Wild Wild West vibe. Athletes learning market value on the fly alongside unregulated businesses who’ve never done amateurs’ deals.

1/2 compliance nightmare— 1/2 necessary evil while awaiting federal legislation.

Another takeaway from talking to college coaches and recruits this weekend:

NO ONE has a clue what to expect with the NIL.

Coaches aren’t supposed to talk to recruits/players about deals/money, but let’s not be NAIVE about this.

Just remove the guardrails at this point.

Can college athletes earn bonuses from brands based on receipt of awards (i.e. Heisman)?

NCAA says athletic performance can't be "consideration" for #NIL compensation. However, honors are not the same as "performance."

Do any state laws/school policies expressly forbid this?

It looks like @stoolathletics has a plan after @stoolpresidente said no thought was put into it.

Barstool Sports, Inc. has filed intent-to-use trademark applications to register the Barstool Athletics brand for managing athletes/entertainers and creating podcasts.

Schools tell me they didn't know Opendorse was paying student athletes directly, and some have concerns about it. However, Opendorse argues if they can't, no business the university has ever done business with can. Just shows the confusion with NIL so far. https://www.forbes.com/sites/kristidosh/2021/07/09/gray-areas-around-nil-rules-and-laws-begin-creating-tension/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

American Top Team is planning a $540,000 NIL commitment to Miami players, per @CaneSport

All 90 scholarship players for the Hurricanes will be offered $6,000 annual endorsement deals

NIL has proven to have a plethora of opportunities for college athletes. There is no doubt in my mind that as soon as there is a federal uniform NIL policy, conference/school/team group licensing deals will open up the doors for additional NIL partnerships.

NEWS: The Division I Board of Directors has voted to approve the interim NIL policy, a source tells @TheAthletic.

College athletes in all 50 states will be able to monetize their names, images and likenesses starting tomorrow (July 1). Doing so will no longer violate NCAA rules.

Tomorrow is the big day. We’ve been talking athletes and assisting with what they should be ready for. Let us know if you need help. DMs are open! #NIL #NCAA #Shine

July 1st! Big day coming for a lot student athletes for NIL opportunities. I suspect some big name deals dropping on that day! #NIL

Sources: Gonzaga and Alabama are finalizing an agreement to play a neutral site game next season in Seattle. There will be a return game in Birmingham during the 22-23 season.
